Ah, right. It's a window manager just like KDE, Sawfish and so forth.
Not everyone has gone with Gnome or KDE, you see. There are dozens of
alternatives. The one using the standard interface favoured by GNU is
WindowMaker, in itself a close clone of the NeXT desktop.

If I run the Gnome control centre (I have to type gnomecc at a command
prompt), it won't actually configure the monitor's settings because my
machine uses the X standards, not the Gnome way of doing things.

I've found out how to set the powersave feature though. I just put
xscreensaver in my .xinitrc file and use xscreensaver-demo to configure
the screensaver. I've got carried away though, and my machine now has a
screensaver of my face in an Xflames furnace just before the monitor
shuts down!
