if 'init' hasn't started, then anything in initrd probably won't have
happened yet. I'd try reinstalling your kernel. Boot from a floppy and
re-run lilo or grub. Maybe even recompile your kernel.

(well, it works for me when I get really odd error messages on startup).

The only other possibility is bad hardware, but my guess is a bad kernel
installation.
