I was talking pre-Hex. Programming was in machine language, but at least
the card reader could handle 600 cards per minute!

No, were were paid enough to be able to buy shoes. 
(Had to watch the printers though, as if the print chain was over-oiled it
would leave a stream of ink across the front of a nice white shirt.)
