I personally think that these things are a waste of time and money. They might be able to filter much of the nasties but they also tend to catch good stuff like if the child is researching breast or genital cancer or looking at anything from the town of Scunthorpe in England. There was even some suggestion a few years ago that one of these filters had filtered out one of the major political party's web sites but not the other.
I think that children should not be allowed to go on the net without supervision would you let you child walk down the main street of Chch alone? Putting too much faith in them is dangerous and they also tend to limit the quality of the web experience.
