Kmail uses maildir by default, you can switch to mbox. Kmail's mbox
support (and support of any subdirectories with mail folders in them
regardless of their format) is crap. Precisely, Kmail doesn't bother
locking files before writing to them (doh). Unfortunately there isn't a
GUI mail client which has useable support for mbox format (or is able
to take a path for opening a mail folder, for that matter).

That conversion is not manual, it's trivial and automatic with
procmail.
