As mentioned in previous discussions I will be bringing along my Toshiba
laptop for a little fine tuning... that is to say that it was only fine tuning
until I had a go at it last night!

The Toshiba has one of those annoying mini-joystick pointer devices that uses
the same driver as a PS/2 mouse but is damn awkward to use. In the interests
keeping the guru's sane tomorrow I attempted to install a serial mouse (the
only one I had).

I edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config file replacing:
Protocol "PS/2"
with
Protocol "Auto"

(as suggested in a linux manual I have)

Needless to say that everything didn't quite turn out as I expected (hence
this note). Upon rebooting the machine I now get a fatal server error and the
message "unable to recognise mouse protocol." Lots of flashing screen and not
much more... in other words - proceed directly to jail - do not pass GO do not
collect $200 :0(

What I didn't do was change the /dev/psaux to /dev/ttys0 and so the poor thing
is quite confused as to what to do.

Aha!... you say - why don't you use your bootdisk? I tried and this does not
work. (I don't know why)
Erm... what about booting from the CD? Again, tried it. I can't even get into
the BIOS to edit the booting order.
OK... What about setting run-level to 1 (FYI it is currently set to 5)? I only
have one boot image available (Linux) and LILO is configured to load straight
into X11. It is at this point that the error occurs.

So... whoever was going to pass on their pearls of wisdom tomorrow in tidying
up my system... can they now bring along a first aid kit and a sledge-hammer
to persuade my machine to behave itself...

Thanks

Alan
