HOWTO: Connecting to the www.phys up2date server
Packages, paths and config examples are for Redhat 7.3
On other distro versions it may vary slightly.
0. Currently this is an experimental server,
available only to hosts within .canterbury.ac.nz domain
Depending on how well it works I may ease the restrictions later on
(Sorry :-( )
1. install the rhn_register and up2date packages
Depending upon your distro there may be several packages, e.g.
rhn-applet-1.0.6-11
rhn_register-gnome-2.7.21-7.x.3
rhn_register-2.7.21-7.x.3
up2date-2.7.86-7.x.3
up2date-gnome-2.7.86-7.x.3
2. fetch the site certificate from ftp://ftp.phys/pub/misc/CURRENT-CA-CERT
and drop it into your system, remember the location
3. in /etc/sysconfig/rhn:
Search the files for "www.rhns.redhat.com"
and replace with "www.phys.canterbury.ac.nz"
Check rhn_register and up2date
and add or modify the line:
sslCACert=<path to>/CURRENT-CA-CERT
IMPORTANT: edit the rhnsd file and modify the interval (minutes)
to a value at least of 1440 (1 day). This server is updated
once daily anyway
4. start the rhn_register and complete the registration process
Note: a. the distro version and CPU are important but the client
will figure it out for you
b. user/passwd could (or not) be relevant, I don't know yet
c. the rest is not important
This will create the systemid file.
5. you can start now using up2date
Cheers,
