Sorry i am obviously not making this very clear. When logging out of Gnome
choosing halt/reboot or at the gdm login choosing shutdown/reboot, i
immediately get a blank screen, then after a few seconds i get a patten of
blocks (no text), but it has been shutting down ok. This not normal behaviour
for shutting down.
The last time it stopped somewhere but it booted with no problems.

Also i only have blank screens at CTRL ALT F1...F7 in X, and i would say from
the login, but i haven't tried it.
If i try to use any of them i'm trapped with a blank screen (with no keyboard
response at all) and have to use the reset.

This has all happend since it did not shutdown properly and i had a corrupted
reisiser / partition.

Is it likely to be the video card a Diamond Stealth II S220 PCI 4MB chip set
Rendition Verite V2100, I have been using it with many Linux distros for 2+
yrs and it has never happened before.

Diamond Stealth II S220, has been reported as compatible only, in MDKs
hardware database XFree86.4.?.? and from xfree86.org for xfree86.3.3.6 as
compatible.

>From xfree86.org. Re Known problems in current driver XFree 3.3.x
Switching from display to VC and back to display can lock up V2x00 cards.
Switching to VC does not restore correct textmode. Instead it defaults to
80x25.
XFree 3.3.x Rendition driver development discontinued in favour of XFree 4.0
driver.

The XFree86-4.1.0 & 4.2.0 has the same two problems.

It is using XFree86.3.3.6, don't know why.
