Yes, a good satisfying evening. 1st computer - fixed lilo boot, OO printer solution did not work but pointed me in the right direction, working fine after this mornings effort, thanks Nick, we just got the wrong driver.
2nd computer - can't install lilo or grub, my boot ptn is too far from the beginning of the disk and I don't want to repartition, found 2 problems arising from updating to m8.2 and fixed both, some other packages were also missed by the M8.2 install. Did not visit the parsing problem with kwrite & kate, may tackle it some other time if I can't find a workaround. Someone suggested BlueFish as an alternative, Ihave installed it and its looking good. Thanks again for the help guys.
