Bill Evans is on permanent record as saying:
:
:Not a silly question, though you might think these are.
:What is a telnet port?

A program (the telnet daemon) will listen at a specified address on your
computer. The address it listens to is the port. Most distributions
that I've used recently have had telnet access disabled.

It can be enabled through /etc/inetd.conf (although this may vary across
distros) If you need more specific instructions, you'll have to let me
know what distro you're using. (Quickly, before I leave work, cause I
still haven't gotten a connection at home yet...)

:What is a port scanner?

A program that will probe each port and see if there is a program
listening there.

Hope this helps.
