Have a rehersal on your current distribution. Get a kernel source from 
somewhere, 2.4.19 is the current stable one. Unpack it, and go to 
/usr/src/linux. type "make menuconfig". If you can cope with answering all 
the questions and end up with a running kernel you will be able to install 
Gentoo, if not then take great care to think about the wisdom of attempting a 
Gentoo install on your own.
