ICQ will send text to an sms (vodaphone) cellphone, and I believe some of the linux ICQ clones will too,
and you can send them back :-) there was a fellow in karori offering a free email based sms gateway, look here: http://203.79.82.38/FreeSMS/index_html it says its to be discontinued "shortly" in October 2001, and was based on mtnmsn, so I think it may now be dead.
