Thankyou Nick, thankyou Christopher.  I sort of have it working, but not to 
the original Linux box (RedHat).  I used tcpdump to monitor the incoming 
stuff on the other box (Debian) and saw that I *was* getting some activity.  
I then set up a telnetd on the Debian box (apt-get beats rpm again), et voila!

All I was really bothered about was 'can I do this?'.  It's not there yet 
because I need to get the home LAN to dial out periodically and register with 
DynDNS or something so I can be sure of getting back in, but I have shown it 
can be done under controlled conditions.

So, there's something funky about how I've got my network set up, but I can 
track that down at leisure now that I'm happy it's mostly doing what it's 
supposed to do.

I must say it is weird to be able to ssh out from home to a machine on the 
other side of the world, log in and telnet back to the router box on the 
shelf and then back into the same machine...
