Yes, testing the later 2.5 kernels and providing good bug reports to the
appropriate kernel maintainer will help towards 2.6 being a better
kernel than 2.4 was at it's release.

With the patches in the Gentoo kernels, I'd be very reluctant to refer to
them as conservative.
