my 2 roubles:

scripting is an important part of life with linux. Just tbeing able to
write a very brief script to download a selection of files, analyse a
log report, whatever.

I'm not so sure c is essential to a newbie/enduser. Sure the whole
system is written in c, but if you just wish to process a few text
files and maintain your system etc, then simple scripting is fine.

Also 5 mins per language is not really enough.

Therefore I think pick three main scripting languages and give, say,
20-30 mins on each, then 20 minutes to summarise "the rest". I am not
volunteering, in fact the reason I want some depth to the discussions is
to build my own knowledge base :-)

I'd choose bash/shell (including piping, redirection, a bit of awk &
sed) as one, perl as the next and python as the third. Thats not to put
down anyones favourite language. Just personal choice, a "feeling" about
whats going to be"useful" to most people.

python seems to be building a real following.
