Since someone mentioned my name.... An historical and up-to-date note
Recent memory first -- coz this triggered that I was supposed to tell others in the dept :-)--- rdesktop works fine on our linux machines (version 1.1 -- the older versions had a few problems earlier this year). I just went on the RHCE course and while in the pub afterwards recovering, we discussed terminal server and its workings and how we loaded it down during a lab experiment and it all turned to custard after 50 users were on it. Thats where the other person said to me -- Ahah -- thats a windows 2000 problem. nothing to do with terminal services or how fast the machine is or memory or whatever we were thinking of upgrading. Windows 2000, he said, had problems internally with anything over 40 users. That explains some of the problems we were having.... Historical note -- we did have about 50 Xterminals on one ethernet (10Meg coax) when we shifted to workstations on the same coax generally things were better, but I did have one moment where I jumpstarted (Solaris version of kickstart) a whole bench of 8 machines at once and a student at the next bench asks his neighbour "Hey - has the network gone done -- I'm not getting character echo" Whoops -- Kill a couple of machines.... "Oh -- its come back now -- all ok" So -- about 5 kickstarts is all you should get on a 10Meg coax -- results by experiment :-) (Did the whole lab of 30 of the same machines in a new building on a 10Mb Switched network -- nobody noticed it -- although the one server was thrashing) Pete -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- - I N V E S T I N A L L U N I V E R S I T Y S T A F F - ------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Glassenbury Computer Science dept.
