stage 2 & 3 only get you a very bare bones machine, you still have to
compile a kernel, X, kde /whatever. You even need to compile a cron
daemon and a syslogd - although they are pretty small.

The stage 3 files now seem to come in many flavours. for the i386
heritage (ie non ppc, alpha or other exotica) there now seem to be the
following files available. As you will see there are stage 3 tarballs
optimised for most targets now, from 386 to athlon xp and p4:
