stage 2 & 3 only get you a very bare bones machine, you still have to compile a kernel, X, kde /whatever. You even need to compile a cron daemon and a syslogd - although they are pretty small.
The stage 3 files now seem to come in many flavours. for the i386 heritage (ie non ppc, alpha or other exotica) there now seem to be the following files available. As you will see there are stage 3 tarballs optimised for most targets now, from 386 to athlon xp and p4: Index of /pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/ 1.4_rc1/x86 livecd-basic-1.4_rc1-r2.iso 123M livecd-ut2003-i586-1.4.1.iso 223M stage1-x86-1.4_rc1-20020908-1208.tar.bz2 10.0M stage2-i386-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 50.8M stage2-i486-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.1M stage2-i586-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.2M stage2-i586_k6-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.1M stage2-i586_k6.2-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.1M stage2-i586_k6.3-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.1M stage2-i586_pentium.mmx-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.2M stage2-i686-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.3M stage2-i686_athlon-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.1M stage2-i686_athlon.tbird-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.3M stage2-i686_athlon.xp-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 51.3M stage2-i686_pentium2-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 50.9M stage2-i686_pentium3-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 50.9M stage2-i686_pentium4-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 50.9M stage3-i386-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 83.6M stage3-i486-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.1M stage3-i586-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.2M stage3-i586_k6-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.2M stage3-i586_k6.2-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.2M stage3-i586_k6.3-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.2M stage3-i586_pentium.mmx-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.2M stage3-i686-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.5M stage3-i686_athlon-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.2M stage3-i686_athlon.tbird-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.4M stage3-i686_athlon.xp-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.5M stage3-i686_pentium2-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.0M stage3-i686_pentium3-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 84.1M stage3-i686_pentium4-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 83.8M On Fri, 22 Nov 2002 13:10:20 +1300 (NZDT) Paul <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > you'd think going straight to a stage2 or 3 install would be the go > there.. > > how good are these procompiled stages Nick?? > > Regards > > Paul Swafford -- Nick Rout <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
