For the first problem of Open Office.Org (OOo) dieing on boot:
I suspect that OOo crashed at some point, on restarting OOo it is trying
to "restore" the file(s) that were open when it crashed and the file is
corrupted and OOo is crashing (it shouldn't but this is a common problem
with M$ Office as well).
Assuming you can see some things in dialogs check out:
Tools | Options | OOo | Paths | Backup for the location of the backups.
Key sequence: Alt+t,o,Ctrl+home,+, down arrow 7 times, tab, down arrow 3
times, Alt+e)
The default location for the backup folder is ~/.openoffice/user/backup

If this folder is empty I am wrong and ignore this, if it isn't empty
move the file(s) to somewhere else and see if this solves the problem.

For the second problem of not having text in your menus:
I haven't had this particular problem but try turning off the font
replacement table:
Tools | Options | OOo | Font Replacement | uncheck Font replacement
table
Key sequence: Alt+t,o,Ctrl+home,+, down arrow 9 times, Alt+a, Enter

No guarantee that I'm on track but trying these shouldn't take long.

Let us know how you get on.
