Thanks for the support, I too am fully aware of the conseqences of what he is doing if he gets it wrong. This is why I suggested Postfix to him. Postfix has the advantage that Wietse Venema is a very experienced networking software author who fully understands the ramifications of getting it wrong. He has therefore set up Postfix to be secure by default. This means that it is necessary to mis-configure it fairly extensively for it to become an open relay rather than the reverse. imho, it's pretty unlikely that Kevin will come to grief in an antisocial way. Also Mandrake uses ( or used to use ) Postfix by default as the mail agent. I support Kevin's efforts to learn about and set up a mailserver, afterall we all started out knowing very little.
