Some of you may be interested in a small follow up to my gentoo talk.

Version 1.4 release candidate2 has now been released for a while. The cd
download is now over 500MB

BUT you do get a whole lot of precompiled binaries. At first glance
this seems to defeat the point of compiling for your processor, but
there is an iso for each architecture, so presumably you still get
optimised binaries, although I haven't confirmed exactly whats on the
new cd's. The avaiable iso's seem to be (ix86 only, I haven't
investigated the other architectures, but there seem to be ppc and sparc
directories on the nz mirror)

athlon-mp
athlon-xp
athlon
i586
i686
pentium3
x86

Personally I would wait for 1.4 final if I was about install gentoo, and
then work from there.

For those that want to look around the available packages and iso's the
NZ mirror is here

http://linux.citylink.co.nz/gentoo/releases/1.4_rc2/x86/

and the very good documentation at http://www.gentoo.org/

Enjoy!
