Sure, and for most people who are just tinkering and not running it
seriously as a server, I often end up seeing one large partition for
everything.

LVM helps by being able to resize filesystems on the fly, so it's possible
to decide to easily reallocate partitions. (Although I'd admit, Partition
Magic does just as good a job reallocating Linux partitions..)
