Slosh is on permanent record as saying:
:> anyway in common use mp3's are not used for backup, but for playing!

:I would argue that since I had a once had a CD, ripped the songs to my

:so I made a new one out of the mp3s, wouldn't that be analogous to a backup?

Certainly. Lower quality, but a backup. Which is one thing that the
RIAA seems to gloss over. They say that digital transmissions are
pristine compared to the original. The original CD and an mp3 version
are drastically different from a digital point of view. Beyond that,
many of the p2p networks introduce errors into files transfered. (Those
clicks where a HTTP header is dumped into the audio frame during a
transmission retry) I personally can't stand listening to anything
encoded at a low bit rate, and with errors. I'd rather pay for a good
copy. (Of course, I also think that $30/CD is insane.)

In my case, I didn't want to try to pack my CD collection from Canada,
so I encoded them onto mp3 discs and put my collection into storage.
I'm sure the RIAA would brand me a criminal for it, too.
