So I did (it was switched on in the BIOS, anyway, but I set it to
irq=7 in the modules.conf, too). Quite interestingly, CPU load did not
change a bit, and things also did not get any faster.

Well, having found now that the mustek_pp backend does not use the
kernel parport support, this is not surprising any more...
