Check to see where the kde2.2 packages installed them selves. Major updates to the gui are sometimes installed along side the pervious version not over the top of incase theres problems with the new version (in 8.2 Mandrake's Kde3 packages installed them selves in /opt not over the top of kde2). I'd suggest you have a look for a /opt directory and see if it has kde 2.2 installed there. If so there should be a new entery to your login manager (kdm/xdm/gdm). If theres no new entery but the packages did install in /opt you'll need to add the entry or find the start script for kde2.2 it should be some where like /opt/kde2.2/bin. Hope that helps.
