Do you have an X display running? If so, you might wanna point your 'DISPLAY' environment variable at it (MandrakeUpdate wants to display a GUI)... For urpmi... well, I'm not surprised you don't have it, Mandrake 6.1 is kinda, um, old... consider upgrading? :)
