Hi all,

I set up a CD-burner in my server last night. Quite an interesting task
since I use a bare-bones Slackware system with my own kernel, so I had to
compile the relevant modules and set it all up myself, then find the
relevant packages which I hadn't installed off the Slackware CD. HOWTOs
are quite useful, BTW. Not bad if you know what you're doing...
certainly not as painful as the joystick driver was.

So far I've noticed the following:

A great feature of 'cdrecord' is that you can specify the write speed.
So I can write a 16x-rated disc in a 48x drive, while keeping it quiet
and ensuring my old hardware can keep the data flowing.

A great feature of 'mount' is that if you screw it up you can cause a
kernel panic. I hadn't seen one of those in a few years.

A great feature of Windows is that opening "my computer" makes it look at
all the drives, including the ones mounted from Samba. Doing this while
burning a CD can be hazardous... the write buffer got down to 10% before
climbing back up... whew :)

Now I just need to write some scripts to semi-automate the backup
process. GUIs are for wimps ;)

Cheers,

- Dave
