I did somehing like this a while back. Mencoder (part of mplayer) does
it. Make sure you have the png dev package installed when you compile
mplayer. From the man page, something like:

mencoder *.png -mf on:fps=25 -o output.avi -ovc divx4

I'd recommend using lavc for encoding.
