Well kids, what a struggle! It appears that there is an issue with linux-2.4.18 and this particular sound chipset 82801DB AC'97 Audio (is it right in this instance to call it a chipset?).


Most of the queries on the net were posted to kernel lists and vaguely answered. I seem to have two possibilities, recompile to later than 2.4.18 or try ALSA. Looking at the ALSA docs, I see that versions of 82801 are suported but not 82801DB specifically. The one person I saw who posted a follow-up to trying ALSA had only limited success so I've resolved to compile 2.4.20 next weekend.

Any other thoughts appreciated - especially comments about ALSA...
