I didn't see any bruises on Jason's head (but there were a few holes in
the wall?) but his samba is now working.

Having reinstalled previously, any link between creating users and
creating _samba_ users had been broken, so it was a straightforward
matter of fixing a couple of enthuiastic edits to smb.conf, and running
smbpasswd -a to add new users.

Samba's authentication is separate from mandrake's linux, by default.
This is probably a good thing :-) but it isn't obvious if you haven't
come across it before.
