Actually a company i get my trust account software from write in Omnis,
a database management software thingy (4GL??). They also do a rental
management package, as there are many similar features if you are
running rentals professionally. (Trust account for rent etc - I am
talking the real estate agants type of service here).

The point is the Omnis development environment and runtime now runs on
Linux. However the rental management software is NOT free (beer OR
speech).

Probably not what you are after, I would look at GnuCASH which is quite
sophisticated. Being a non-accountant, I think the difficult part would
be setting up the right accounts...

One thing, it will import those files that banks often export from their
online websites - ASB allow you to download transactions as OFX (MS
Money), QIF (Quicken) CSV (Comma separated?) or TDV (Tab delimited?). I
know gnucash supports either OFX or CSV. This can make coding into a
program like that VERY quick.

Its a type of sgml, heres an entry from one of my statements in OFX
format.

<STMTTRN>
<TRNTYPE>INT
<DTPOSTED>20030602
<TRNAMT>-22.59
<FITID>2003060201
<NAME>ASB BANK - INTEREST
</STMTTRN>

Fairly self explanatory and dumped straight into the ledger by gnucash I
believe.

Anyway, maybe a bit OT now sorry....
