Hm, I was hoping for a more elaborate answer along the lines of what hw detection systems are available, and where they fall short. You still don't specify "all the ones". An old version of knoppix which I tried on 1 or 2 computers detected all hardware available, except the one for which Linux doesn't have drivers (here we can argue whether reading out the device model strings counts as "detection"). The SuSE detection has never failed me on about a dozen different machines, although the version in the rescue system didn't load the eepro100 driver for the latest version of that hardware. That could be an issue with the rescue system (these are often a little older). From all this I still wouldn't make blanket statements.
