Not sure if Carl C is striking the same problem but when I was looking for
our local Toy library ( for similar reasons) the challenge was finding
something that would track multiple component of a main item. While Koha
handled the single items (tricycle, scooter etc.) things that had subitems
(1000 piece jigsaw, play house w/furniture...) just got too hard to do.

Given that my programming skills are appalliing to say the least and they
needed something right there and then we ended up having to go down the
wintel upgrade path... would be good to get something together for next
time though

There is another way.

Sponsorship.

Toy libraries are always short of cash, so it would have to
be corporate. Perhaps a company already involved in open
source software looking for some more good PR. Perhaps a
company like ... IBM? Now, I wonder if there's anybody
on the list from IBM ;-)

I've got the skills and can make the time (current boss
willing - I think he'd be OK) if you've got the cash,
Carl K.

Cheers,
Carl C.
