They tripwire and snort are a good place to start, although possibly a
bit academic finding out after the fact...

If you want to 'harden' a linux install, check out
www.bastille-linux.org which can give some good pointers, and a
ready-rolled 'tighten-up' for some distros.

IMHO, Security for computer systems online is as much about attitude as
it is about systems and software.  Tomes have been cast into paper and
ink on this topic...
