Hi-ho, Craig F suggested this off-list and I had a bit of a play. seems that apm dosn't work in smp, although acpi will, so I might try a roll-your-own with acpi patches in it.
I have some slight complications with the machine, as I use vmware on it, and have had problems getting the vmnet modules to compile against custom headers.. We'll see how I get on. Either way, I'm happy to press the power button if that's what's needed to keep the second processor alive :-). 'gnight (morning it seems).
