Not so if you run whatever in the background and log out. But generally root access gives you much more control, and that includes potential of making any mistakes, which would give an ordinary user a "permission denied" or "disk quota exceeded" message, quite effective. One popular example is the unintentional insertion of a space in a rm -rf filename* command. Depending on where you are, it makes a huge difference whether you are root or not. It may not happen that often, but once it happens you will appreciate the "paranoia".
