Well compiling 2.2.19 (not 2.4.19 Tim) with a redhat compiler could be a bit tricky. Redhat aren't a great fan of overly backwards compatibility. You *might* have more success by compiling under a non-redhat OS, slackware, debian, or even knoppix.
If that doesnt work try going back to an older (standard) compiler. Give 2.95 or 2.7 a go --- tho someone on the list can probably suggest an exact version that will work with the 2.2 series kernels. Although lastly, hasn't LRP gone dead? Any specific reason you're choosing LRP instead of a more up-to-date maintained distribution? Have a looksee at http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html for other options in the 'category' you're after. Older isnt nessesscarily better for old machines, Debian still supports 386 although you might need to install and compile a kernel via a different machine if you've got say less than 8Mb of ram.
