You could try using the Morphic; a UI that sits on top of the Squeak
variant of Smalltalk.  Unfortunately I could find no tutorials oriented
towards children.  However, you do not have to type, and Squeak does
have sound support, animations are easy to do (IIRC) and it does run
under Linux.
