Hello all
Well I have finally got my system up and running. It only took about an hour and was quite easy when I thought the process through logically.
It appears that it will take a little time to get used to everything that has loaded but it looks good at present. I have one question: where can I find an rpm (or whatever) that will allow me to play windows based games on Mandrake ? I enjoy car racing and shoot-en-up games. I know that they are out there but I don't know what they are called.
Shoot-em-up games recently are being ported to linux to run natively. A couple of good examples are Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tourney 2003, both of which I run. UT I needed to download a binary installer from the net, but UT2003 includes a linux installer on the game CD's.
For car-racing you can try to run the windows games with WineX from http://www.transgaming.com/ That allows you to run (some) windows games and other software under linux, but it does cost a small fee...
Also, what graphics card/CPU etc...do you have in your PC? You will need hardware 3D graphics for most games, and a fast CPU to move all the data. Nvidia and ATI graphics cards are quite well catered for in the linux world, but getting the hardware 3D to work is sometimes a bit trickier than the 2D graphics.
Kind regards,
Chris Wilkinson, Christchurch.
