I was not in any way inferring that your friend did not know what he as doing, sorry if it appeared that I did. I run certain things as root soley because I cant be stuffed sorting out permission, root is always the lowest common denominator (along with chmod -R 777 * :-)
that linux is somehow less susceptible to viruses, worms and the like, <clug:rant offence_intended=false> I just thought that the above statement was incorrect, it just depends how much time the sysadmins have to secure their system. In theory you could create a chroot jail for every daemon, but that would probably be a full time job. More worms and viruses will appear on Linux, the damage they do depends on the sysadmins. </clug:rant>
