Apologies. I mis-read your original post.
My request for a lesson still holds.
I still think this would be an excellent topic for a tech-talk CLUG meeting.
I'd love to learn how this '--prefix' thing will help me to install
untrusted software a bit more safely.

I'm trying to eliminate the number of things I do as 'root'.
