OK, XD2 is installed on my machine.

Getting rid of Java wasn't an easy task - I wiped it out of every
directory in which I could find files with names containing "j2re" or
"jre" and the installation still hung - but I went back and removed the
j2re-1.4.1 rpm (can't imagine what was left of it) with gnorpm, reran
the installer for the nth time and it finished.
