things seem to work a bit better (=work) when I use a file and when I don't do something that uses the display (halt, mencoder) man seems to suggest that it might be necessary to specify a display adapter (?) but doesnt' mention how. Still not entirely sure I'm not missing the point a bit. Would it help if I specified the adapter at the command? ie. mplayer -vo x11 /mnt/Movies/TheMatrix.avi (or whatever the actual command is...) cheers anton
