 Subject: [nzlug] National Installfest
----

As those who have been reading the Auckland installfest list will know,
some discussion has been underway as to the possibility of holding
nationaly-coordinated Linux installfests early next year. The date
settled upon is 17/18 January, but we're still deciding if we want to have
a one-day event or go for a two day event, or even a
Saturday morning-to-Sunday night marathon.
Our view is that while local installfests garner some local publicity
fairly easily, major coverage of the Linux message is often missed because
of the low-scale nature of the events. Auckland's last installfest got
quite significant publicity, for a number of reasons, but obviously the
odds of getting similar free column inches a second time is minimal. A
national event would be sufficiently high-profile that it would likely get
major publicity again - Possibly even TV news coverage on 1 and 3. To the
best of my knowledge there have been no national installfest events
anywhere since 1998, when Canada and France both held them.

If any other LUGs would be interested in coordinating installfests to run
simultaneously with the Auckland event, please contact me off-list at
"if2k3 at fear-the dot net". If there's sufficient interest, a dedicated
list can be created for discussion.
Note: Auckland has no intention of running the show. The intent is that
every LUG will run their own installfest. The coordination is simply to
allow leverage of media and advertising to greatest effect.
