in AIX single user mode and in many LPmuds ed is the only editor available.
knowing vi helped a lot to not loose sanity in those situations as well,
there is also the advantage of being able to learn sed rather easely.

but to this day i still get irritated about some misfeatures that vi has.
(or as alan cox put it:
  vi has two modes the one in which it beeps and the one in which it doesn't)
