Hi Nick, Zane and others who have helped with my time setting problems. After resetting the CMOS / BIOS, typing in every arcane command to change the settings under both GUI and text logins as a variety of users, setting and unsetting myself to GMT, locale time .. I think I have found the problem. > Nick Wrote what is the output of > ls -l /etc/local time
The result was: Sep 25 13:05 /etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Pacific/Auckland which doesn't look too bad unless the time is really 20:12 at night but it did get me thinking. I decided to look at the contents of my time zone file. It is the only time zone file in my system with a zero byte length. I am going to have to find a copy of it and replace it and hopefully this will end my saga. Thanks to all who helped.
