When I had jetstart I had the modem as a straight IP on the network. 
All the workstations used the linux box at 192.168.1.2 as the gateway,
which then made a pptp link to 192.168.1.1 the alcatel.  This worked
nicely, and a 128K dsl link is nothing compared to 100 Mbit for the rest
of the network.

Because the modem was on the local network I could simply connect to its
IP directly.

Hence my firewall had a eth0 and a ppp0, but I suspect ipcop will choke
on this.
