Yeah, I can verify that too: talking on the phone to my friend, he said
"wow (expletive deleted) that�s an earthquake". I didn't know what was
talking about until, about 4 seconds later I felt it too. The S and P
waves travel quite slowly. Thus, working on angles, the earthquake was
somewhere north of Christchurch.
