The thing is - is not the image a reflection of what we are? What is it that makes the substance? We could get into some fairly heavy philosophy here but let's not! :-)
It threatens very many people that we have a dreadlocked pothead in parliament, and that the cops do nothing about it. He would be thrown out if he was caught with weed, and they don't catch him. This infuriates many people. Me too to a certain extent, even though I very strongly believe that NZ should decriminalise, or even legalise Mary J. It's not people who pass the image off that he does that will make the change though, it's people who turn up in suit and tie. Doctors and lawyers whose kids have been ruined by prohibition. Is this "image sensitivity" the way I want the world? No way. That is how it is though, and for it to change it needs a more measured approach. I would love for people to be able to turn up in their birthday suit - on a hot summer's day, why not? Not going to happen soon though and, I believe, not going to be brought about by Nandor.

So are you saying image is more important than substance?

I certainly hope not. I think Nandor has done the
Green Party, and the left in NZ in general, an enormous disservice. It
would be a pity if his riduculous dreds did for the image of the Linux what
they are doing for the NZ left. Don't get me wrong, I can't put my
finger on a single thing that he says that I would have any fundamental
disagreement with. I like his ideas far more than any other politician outside
the Greens, and the Greens far more than anyone else. I just think that
he is the reason the Greens will always be a -10% party as opposed to a
+15%. Its all about the packaging - something Linux people (companies)
are beginning to realise...?
