Hi Zane (and list),

And this IS on topic I guess, as it will directly affect their ability to use Linux and use it as a means of connecting to the net. There is an awesome article in Unlimited Magazine (unlimited.co.nz) talking about this very subject in detail. It covers MS plans for Longhorn and it's 'kernel level' inbuilt search ability. As if the NT kernel was not bloated enough already...

Anyway, if you can, read the article (theyare part of IDC online, so I hope the article makes it online soon) and it will enlighten you.

Cheers

Jason

Jason,
I just quickly scanned that article and couldn't find anything that fits with what you described.
Could you be more specific?

Hi All,

I was talking to several people after the movie about Microsofts attemp at controlling the Internet through it's OS Monopoly. I won't go into it but they have a real shot at it if they do what I think they will/can do with Longhorn. It will change the shape of the Internet as we know it - and not for the better as you might imagine. I am in the industry but don't claim to be an expert by any means but trust me, their ideas are SCARY. Below is a link to an article that just scratches the surface of some of the planned changes in Longhorn. I will say this, if they can leverage their monopoly into controlling search, we are screwed to a large degree...combined with Palladium and DRM, the outlook is bleak. I only hope that in the interim, their announcements continue to amount to vapourware so that the uptake of alternatives will preclude their releases.... In essence, what they do affects ALL OSS users - ok, so maybe not so OT after all??
