First thing to do is always: route -n
When connected to the net you should have one default route (0.0.0.0/0) via your ppp0. If the route table looks stuffed, disable any eths, restart the network service and check the default route again. Delete the bad route, add the right one. Your ISP normally assigns the DNS... When connected cat /etc/resolv.conf to see what's in there. The debug from tail -vf /var/log/messages can also help.
